DRIVING IN AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

You can drive on your current overseas licence for up to 3 months in most Australian states and territories (6 months in Victoria) and for up to 12 months in NZ. Although you’ll find driving pretty similar to that in the UK, the rules of the road do differ in some significant ways and we strongly recommend you read and digest the appropriate road rules for the state or territory you will be living in. To help you get around safely, we’ll be putting together a short article with tips for new Australian and NZ drivers. It also links to the websites from which you can download the current driving rules – you’ll find it in the Living in Australia section of the website.

When your grace period is up and it’s time to get an Australian or NZ licence, there is no need to fearfully recall the traumas associated with passing your driving test the first time round. If you hold a current licence from a recognised country, such as the UK, USA or Ireland, you are exempt from sitting both theory and practical driving tests. You just have to apply for a new licence and pay the fee – some states may also require you to have an eyesight test.
