FINDING ACCOMMODATION IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

For those who are not being met and accommodated by friends or family there are a number of ways to obtain accommodation in Australia or New Zealand. Rental property is available to view online and this would seem the most logical place to begin. What you get for your dollar will soon become apparent. Bearing in mind your migrant status and the likelihood that your shipping container is months away from arriving, furnished is probably the sensible option, although not strictly necessary if you're happy to 'rough it' or purchase the basics as many migrants choose to do.

Simply being a migrant also has its drawbacks. Without adequate proof of who you are in advance of arrival and a 'no income' status causes all sorts of problems. Therefore, if you find properties suitable for rent ensure that you make contact with the rental agency well before arriving to ascertain the likelihood of obtaining a 6 month rental agreement. A bond (deposit) is required and many rental property owners have concerns about pets being on the premises.

SHORT TERM RENTAL

With standard rental contracts being for a minimum of 6 months an easier approach may be to identify a holiday home or holiday apartment that will see you through the initial couple of weeks it generally takes to find one's feet before adventuring further and obtaining a secure rental property. This is easily accomplished online or via your local holiday booking agent. There is also another way of achieving a similar result and that is to use the services of a relocation agent.

RELOCATION AGENTS - OFTEN BRITISH EXPATS

Relocation agents are generally migrants who have invested in property and now look to rent out such property to newly arrived couples or families. As such the houses or apartments tend to be 3 or 4 bedroom, fully furnished and may include additions such as introductions to local estate agencies (real estate agents), etc. Going one step further are the 'meet and greet' services offered more frequently by British migrants now settled in Australia or New Zealand. Airport pick-up is generally offered in this instance and what you get is what you pay for – so the price will vary and because the property you are offered is only available for short term rent (a week or two) prices are much higher that the weekly rent expected for a 6 month tenancy contract. Once again you are advised to do your homework and really get to know your relocation agent and what you are paying for.
